Mixbook's Story Mode, announced in June 2026, is built for exactly that problem. You describe the occasion, upload your photos, and the AI drafts a complete book for you to edit. How Mixbook Story Mode Works

Story Mode starts as a short chat. You say what the book is for, such as a trip, a first year with a new baby, or a gift, and answer a few questions about the style and story you want. Then you upload your photos. In one hands-on test by Tom's Guide, the app asked for at least 20.

Mixbook then builds three versions of your book, with layouts and optional captions. You can order one as it is or edit every detail first.

Mixbook says the tool combines Apple's on-device photo analysis (on iPhone and iPad) with AI language analysis and its own layout technology. It describes the technology as patent-pending and claims Story Mode makes creating a book 3.5 times faster and halves the time it takes to place an order. Those are company claims, not independent test results.

Story Mode launched in the iOS app on June 11, 2026, and is now also available on mixbook.com. An Android app is not out yet, but Mixbook has a waitlist. The tool itself is free to use, and you pay when you order a printed book.

Is Story Mode Worth Using?

The hardest part of a photo book is starting: choosing photos, deciding their order, and laying out every page. Story Mode takes care of that first draft. If you have a big backlog of photos and never finish a book because the job feels too big, this is a sensible shortcut.

It won't replace people who enjoy building every page by hand, and it doesn't need to. The regular editor is still there. Because every element stays editable, the worst case is that you save time on the rough draft and change what you don't like. One tip: read the AI-written captions and rewrite any that don't sound like your family.
